What is the difference between Ylang Ylang and Cananga?

Cananga and Ylang Ylang essential oil come from the same species of tree. Cananga is the macrophylla variety of Cananga odorata, while Ylang Ylang comes from the true variety of Cananga ordorata. The main difference in the essential oil of the two varieties is that Cananga has higher amounts of the chemical compound Beta-caryophyllene. Beta-caryophyllene supports healthy cellular function,* and is particularly soothing to the skin. It also supports healthy nerve and immune function.*

Where does Cananga essential oil come from?

The essential oil comes from the flower of the Cananga tree. These flowers are pendulous with narrow, greenish-yellow petals. The flowers can be harvested from the tree about every two months, but the best time of year is during the summer months, mainly between June and August. The flowers are harvested early in the morning, around sunrise, to prevent the sun from shining too long on the flowers, which would cause the essential oil to begin to evaporate. Shortly after harvest, the flowers are distilled for essential oil.

History

The yellow flowers of the Cananga tree, native to tropical Asia, have been used in traditional practices for centuries. Today, Indonesians still put Cananga flowers on the pillows of newlyweds as a blessing of a happy union. Cananga's rich history and powerful effects are largely due to its high concentration of beta-caryophyllene, which is a skin-soothing compound found in many essential oils, including Frankincense, Copaiba, and Ylang Ylang. Applied topically, Cananga has renewing properties that can rejuvenate the appearance of the skin. Cananga's light, floral fragrance can have a calming, soothing and uplifting effect when diffused. Like Ylang Ylang, Cananga essential oil helps reduce stress and promote calmness. Cananga is soothing to the nervous system* and skin.
