In a world where we are constantly looking for the next outlet for our devices, we often forget that we ourselves have a “battery” that needs to be charged. And no, we’re not talking about that third cup of coffee or an energy drink. We’re talking about something much more powerful, something Nikola Tesla already understood: the infinite, freely available energy around us.

 

Why this is more important now than ever

We live in a time when “energy crisis” has taken on a very personal meaning. Burnout rates are skyrocketing, chronic fatigue is the order of the day, and more and more people are feeling literally and figuratively “empty. At the same time, we spend 90 percent of our time indoors, staring at screens, cut off from the natural sources of energy our bodies are evolutionarily tuned to.
This is no accident. Our bodies were not designed for this modern lifestyle. We evolved as beings in constant exchange with the nature around us. The earth beneath our feet. The air we breathe. The cosmic energy above us. It may sound woolly, but science is now telling us what ancient cultures have known for thousands of years.

Science speaks

Recent research in neurobiology and quantum physics is shedding fascinating new light on ancient wisdom. Dr. James Oschman, a pioneer in energy medicine, has shown that our bodies function as a sophisticated electromagnetic system. When we make direct contact with the earth – what we call “earthing” or “grounding” – something remarkable happens. Inflammation levels in our bodies drop. Stress hormones decrease. What’s remarkable is that these phytoncides also have a measurable effect on our human bodies. They stimulate the production of Natural Killer (NK) cells, a crucial part of our immune system that helps fight cancer cells, among other things. Research shows that even a short two-hour stay in the forest can significantly increase the number of NK cells in our blood, and this effect often lasts up to 30 days.

Biophilia: love of nature in your genes

Imagine this: you are about to buy a new home. You have a choice between two identical apartments for the same price. One overlooks a concrete wall, the other a park. Which one do you choose? Chances are, like most people, you will go for the park view without hesitation. But why really?

The answer lies hidden deep within our genes. E.O. Wilson, a renowned Harvard University biologist, introduced the concept of “biophilia”: our innate tendency to seek connection with nature and other living systems. It is not a casual preference or learned habit – it is literally programmed into our DNA.

The evidence for this genetic connection is all around us. Why do people pay significantly more for a hotel room overlooking nature? Why do hospital patients recover measurably faster when they look out on green surroundings? Why does our heart rate drop at the sound of the ocean or birdsong?

Fascinatingly, research on biophilia shows that natural environments have a direct effect on our brain waves, heart rate and hormone production. They activate our parasympathetic nervous system – our “rest and recovery” system – while simultaneously enhancing our ability to focus and be creative. It is as if our entire system “comes home” when we are in contact with nature. It explains why a walk in the woods can be so refreshing for both body and mind: our blood pressure drops, stress hormones decrease, our creativity increases, and our problem-solving ability improves. It’s as if our whole system returns to its natural rhythm.

 

The Tesla connection

Nikola Tesla, that brilliant inventor ahead of his time, spoke of a “cosmic energy” that is all around us. He believed that this energy should be freely available to all. Although his technological dream of free energy has not yet been realized, we can indeed “plug in” to this cosmic energy source. Indeed, our bodies are naturally built to do so. We are, as it were, biological Tesla receivers. We have only forgotten how to use our “antenna.

The power of focused meditation

This is where the science behind meditation and visualization comes in. Modern brain research shows that regular meditation leads to stunning changes in our brain. The Practice: How does it work?

You can do the meditation sitting, standing, or lying down. The important thing is to choose a posture in which you feel comfortable and in which you can remain calm for a few minutes. The meditation leads you step by step through the process of connecting with the earth below you and the cosmos above you.

Scientific rationale for visualization

The effectiveness of visualization is not just anecdotal. Neuroscience research shows that our brain exhibits similar patterns during vivid visualization as it does during actual experiences. The neural networks activated during visualization of an action largely overlap with those active during actual performance of that action.
This explains why visualization can be so powerful. When we imagine ourselves connecting with the earth and the cosmos, we create new neural pathways that support this connection. With each repetition of the meditation, we strengthen these pathways, making the connection more and more natural and powerful.
