The science of Copaiba

Copaiba essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the resin collected from four different species of Copaifera trees: Copaifera reticulata, C. officinalis, C. coriacea, and C. langsdorffii. All four of these trees are native to Central and South America. It is described as having a spicy, woody aroma. The main chemical constituent of Copaiba essential oil is caryophyllene, a bi-cyclic sesquiterpene also found in black pepper. Although caryophyllene is responsible for some of Copaiba's bioactive properties, many other properties of the oil are attributed to diterpenes unique to Copaiba.

For centuries, South Americans have used Copaiba resin to promote respiratory, digestive, urinary, cardiovascular and immune system health. As reported by the first European settlers of Central and South America, Native American Indians used the soothing properties of Copaiba oil resin by smearing it both on their newborns and on warriors returning home from battle. Current research offers an explanation for the traditional use of Copaiba oil, suggesting that Copaiba essential oil is calming, soothing and supportive of the skin and nervous system.*

Recent research on caryophyllene suggests a number of other ways Copaiba essential oil can support overall health. When used internally, caryophyllene possesses strong antioxidant properties, promotes healthy cell function, can help support immune function while supporting overall circulatory health, and can help support gastrointestinal and colon health.*

Additional research has shown that Copaiba essential oil (with all its constituents) can help keep the mouth, teeth and gums clean and looking healthy.
