NMN stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide, a molecule that occurs naturally in all forms of life. At the molecular level, it is a ribo-nucleotide, a basic structural unit of the nucleic acid RNA. Structurally, the molecule consists of a nicotinamide group, a ribose and a phosphate group (Figure 1). NMN is the direct precursor of the essential molecule nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and is considered a key component to increase NAD+ levels in cells.

NAD+ is an essential coenzyme required for life and cellular functions. Enzymes are catalysts that enable biochemical reactions. Coenzymes are “auxiliary” molecules that enzymes need to function. Next to water, NAD+ is the most abundant molecule in the body, and without it, an organism would die. NAD+ is used by many proteins throughout the body, such as the sirtuins, which repair damaged DNA. It is also important for mitochondria, which are the powerhouses of the cell and generate the chemical energy our body uses.

NADH provides the transfer of the extra electrons to the inner membrane of the mitochondria and is considered the activated carrier molecule. NADH converts back to NAD+ in a reverse reaction, and the process of electron transfer takes place with the movement of protons as H+ ions.

Most collagen products contain only one or two types of collagen peptides, usually the collagen types most relevant to skin beauty, elasticity and wrinkles. Collagen is synthesized by animals and is only available from them. Sometimes you will see products marketed as vegan collagen, but if you look closely at the product, you will see that it is usually a collection of vegan amino acids, and not the actual collagen tripeptides. There are vegan products and compounds that support collagen synthesis; in fact, Yarrow Pom Cellular Beauty capsules are vegan and fulfill this role. Glutathione levels often drop when NAD+ levels in the body drop due to diabetes. NMN helps increase both NAD+ and Glutathione in the body. Glutathione is not required for the uptake of NMN. Citrus oils are high in limonene. Limonene stimulates the body's production of glutathione. In the MetaPWR Metabolic Blend, we have both Lemon and Grapefruit essential oils. Glutathione has many benefits for the body, including promoting homeostasis in the body. The physiochemical properties of Glutathione have severely limited the clinical development of oral dosage forms due to its limited membrane permeability and susceptibility to enzymatic degradation, especially in the jejunum. Studies have shown that Glutathione is oxidized in the jejunum, resulting in loss of antioxidant activity. Because of Glutathione's chemical properties, it actually has limited permeability in the gut and is susceptible to degradation by enzymes, creating a molecule that is largely ineffective in its role within the system. Some companies claim a nano-glutathione, but the molecule is the same size whether it is nano or not. As for an oral swallowing product, we do not absorb smaller molecules through the oral mucosa than through the stomach, it just avoids first pass metabolism. That means it is not broken down by the liver into inactive compounds. There is no real benefit to trying to absorb glutathione by mouth rather than through the digestive tract.
