Nerol (lemongrass ) and gastrointestinal tract

In this age of industry and convenience, we are all exposed to toxic substances on a daily basis. The gastrointestinal tract, barring massive environmental exposure, is one of the main places exposed to toxins throughout the body. Repeated exposure to toxic substances in the gastrointestinal tract can lead to sub-optimal functioning and harmful changes that emphasize the need for a health regime that protects against such damage.

To do this, researchers in Mexico conducted a study to determine whether nerol, a small compound found in the essential oil of lemongrass is found, may have a stomach protective effect when ingested. They found that at moderately low levels of intake, nerol had a profound protective effect. On a molecular level, the researchers found that nerol helped maintain a healthy inflammatory response to exposure to toxic substances. While further research is warranted, these results are encouraging and add to the growing evidence supporting the use of natural supplements.
